We believe we have an ethical obligation to the animals we raise. In this increasingly conscious world, compassion is non-negotiable. Holding ourselves to that value is good for the animals, it's good for our consumers and, ultimately, it's good for business. Ensuring the health and wellbeing of our animals is one of our fundamental principles. This is why we work so hard to create facilities that provide the best possible conditions for their health and comfort.
For us, animal welfare is a process of continuous improvement. We're investing in research, both in-house and in partnership with universities, scientists, research institutes/companies and NGOs, in the development of sustainable practices that ensure the highest welfare standards for our animals. Our commitment and transparency on animal welfare is recognized by our inclusion in the 'Business Benchmark on Farm Animal Welfare' annual international study. Another important achievement for us is our Memorandum of Understanding with the NGO World Animal Protection, signed in 2014 to improve practices in our supply and production chain.
Food is nourishing for the body and soul only when it comes from an environment free of distress and discomfort. Your customers can be reassured that every one of our products is created using clean, fresh meat from healthy animals, raised according to our Animal Welfare Commitments. Based on international guidance and legislation, we follow the 'Five Freedoms' defined by the Farm Animal Welfare Council (FAWC):
Freedom from hunger or thirst by ready access to fresh water and a diet to maintain full health and vigour.
Freedom from discomfort by providing an appropriate environment including shelter and a comfortable resting area.
Freedom from pain, injury or disease by prevention or rapid diagnosis and treatment.
Freedom to exhibit normal behaviour by providing sufficient space and proper facilities and contact with their own kind.
Freedom from fear and distress by ensuring conditions and treatment which avoid mental suffering.
